Save the date: Kensington CommUNITY Festival

You are invited to a huge day of fun for the whole family as Kensington celebrates its diverse community at the annual Kensington CommUNITY Festival at the JJ Holland Park precinct. Save the date. It’s on Sunday March 20.

Now in its 9th year the Festival gets bigger and better every year. It celebrates cultural diversity and community connection in a fabulous festival atmosphere with live music from China to Cuba, food from all corners of the globe, henna hand painting, community stalls, face-painting, AFL challenge inflatables, treasure hunts, an animal farm, the Kensington Sustainable Living Expo, workshops and African drumming. And that is just a small sample of the day’s activities and entertainment!

For sports fans the Festival also incorporates the Unity Cup, an AFL 9s touch football round robin celebrating cultural diversity through sport, co-hosted by the Australian Federal Police and the AFL Multicultural Program. This year participating AFL clubs confirmed are Essendon, Western Bulldogs, North Melbourne and St Kilda. Fifteen culturally diverse male and five female teams will compete for the coveted Unity Cup trophy.

The Kensington CommUNITY Festival is organised by Urban Communities and a whole host of local partners. “We are excited once again to be involved in this signature neighbourhood event and of course are proud to be joining up with the Unity Cup for the third year running” said Urban Communities Community Engagement Manager Deb Wilson.

“The Unity Cup is a fabulous example of how the AFL celebrates cultural diversity through sport. To see our diverse community members cheering on the teams and enjoying the rich mix of Festival music, food, entertainment and activities is what the day is all about”.

The Festival is part of the Cultural Diversity Week’s program and principal sponsors are the City of Melbourne and the Victorian Multicultural Commission. The Festival will be held at the JJ Holland Park precinct inclusive of the Bill Vanina Pavilion, Kensington Community Recreation Centre and The Kensington Adventure Playground (the Venny).
